AP - A last-minute emergency request by Santa Claus for a bailout is in danger of going down to a Republican filibuster, potentially putting a stop to toys going out to all US households making under 97K/yr (with those above protected under the sleighroll exemption).
While the majority in the Senate argued that Santa Claus was a cultural and economic pillar of America, and that the bailout would be paid back in full given that Santa travels at unfathomable levels of efficiency, the minority claimed the US post office was already spending over $900 billion a year sending letters to the North Pole, making a bailout excessive. "If charity and good cheer isn't sustainable as a business model", one GOP Senator argued "let it fail." Several Senate Republicans insisted that they support Santa Claus but simply have legitimate concerns about sleigh modernization, and argued that there was no reason to rush the bailout before Christmas when a new Congress could look at the matter more thoroughly.
UPDATE - Great news via Reuters:
President Obama signed the Santa Recovery Act today, allowing Christmas to continue, facing a barrage from all sides ranging from deficit concerns to elf labor standards.
Hope everyone is having a great night with family and that you all enjoyed the laugh.
